To-do list (updated 18 Oct 2026)
- Lucca deaths March–May 1901 searched for a woman who died after giving birth in the hospital (18 Oct). There is no explicit case, and 7 unmarried women are leads; see
02_italy_civil_records/deaths_1901_lucca/findings_hospital_deaths_March-April_1901.md. - Sign back in to FamilySearch in the Claude browser pane (done 18 Oct).
- Download the 1899 Annuario ecclesiastico PDF (saved as
01_italy_lucca/brefotrofio_history/Annuario_ecclesiastico_GoogleBooks_wFKiZcd_NosC.pdf). It does not list the Lucca hospital nuns, but it names the 1899 priests of Avane (S. Cristina, D. Raffaello Fabiani) and Vecchiano.
Things only you (the family) can do to unblock the search for Maria Braccioli
Section titled “Things only you (the family) can do to unblock the search for Maria Braccioli”- Comune di Vecchiano, Ufficio Anagrafe: ask for a certificato storico di famiglia / stato di famiglia storico for Gagliardi Pirro and Braccioli Maria (household from 1920 to 1930), plus Maria’s parents’ household (Braccioli Giovanni, Avane).
- The old population register normally records when each person was struck off as “emigrato all’estero (Brasile)”. That could give Pirro’s emigration date as well as Maria’s.
- It may also give Teresa Maffei’s death date and the family’s house numbers.
- This is the same office that issued Teresa’s birth extract in 2015.
- Archivio Storico Diocesano di Pisa (Avane and Vecchiano belong to the Archdiocese of Pisa), or the parish of S. Cristina, Avane:
- Maria’s baptism (Jan 1889).
- The church wedding of Pirro and Maria (late 1920). A Catholic marriage record names the groom’s baptism parish, which for a foundling may be the Lucca hospital parish. It sometimes notes the guardian or foster family.
- The baptisms of Teresa (Jul 1921) and the twins (Dec 1923).
- FamilySearch Center or affiliate library visit (images restricted online). Open and download:
- Maria’s 1940 São Paulo foreigner card: “Brasil, São Paulo, Cartões de Imigração”, G → “Gaete-Gagliardo”, image 701.
- Pirro’s card: G → “Gagliardo-Gahwiler”, image 9.
- Teresa’s 1921 Vecchiano birth (image 3:1:3Q9M-CSQT-7XP3) and the twins’ 1923 births (3:1:3Q9M-CSQT-76V6, -7JSZ).
- APESP (São Paulo State Archive): if no FamilySearch Center is nearby, order the Certidão de Registro de Estrangeiro for Maria (cert. 630721, reg. 80748) and Pirro (cert. 262920, reg. 68955), about R$ 65 each.
- Ask relatives (Justino family):
- Photos, Maria’s Brazilian ID (carteira modelo 19), and any letters from Italy.
- What “VICENCHIARO / AVILA” (blue pen on the 1930 passport) means.
- Where Maria lived between 1930 and 1966.
- Who Reinou and João Oronzo Justino were.
- Anything about the nun “Nina Gagliardi” and where that name came from.
Other items waiting on you
Section titled “Other items waiting on you”- Lucca inventory screenshots (phone + VPN): unit lists of the sub-series Certificati di collocazione, Movimenti, Segnali e libretti ai tenutari, Esposti, and of section “Risorse umane, economiche e strumentali”.
- Decide when to send the Italian email to the Archivio di Stato di Lucca (
05_correspondence/2026-10_DRAFT_followup_email_ASLu_italiano.md, still on hold). It could also ask the archive to check register 4318 for the 7 women in the deaths findings note. - Email the Ivrea Sisters’ archive ([email protected]) about the sisters at the Lucca hospital c. 1900–1915. I can draft it.
Website (site/)
Section titled “Website (site/)”- Enhanced reading copies of the book scans: add an image-processing step to the site build that creates an “enhanced” version of each register scan (FamilySearch, Antenati, APESP) next to the original:
- contrast stretch / local contrast (CLAHE) to lift faded ink;
- background flattening to remove uneven page shading and microfilm grey;
- unsharp-mask sharpening tuned for handwriting;
- optional deskew and crop to the page edges.
Folder pages would offer Original | Enhanced for each scan. Originals are never modified. Tooling:
sharp(already a dependency) for normalise/CLAHE/sharpen, or OpenCV via Python for flattening and deskew. Process once and cache, as with thumbnails.
What I can do now that FamilySearch works again
Section titled “What I can do now that FamilySearch works again”- Look for Teresa Maffei’s death in Vecchiano, 1922–1930.
- Retry the Antenati 1849 Vecchiano baptisms (Giovanni Braccioli was actually born c. 1852, so 1851–1853 instead).
